4 Things To Know About Installing A New Asphalt Driveway

by Milton Myers

If you have been thinking about installing a driveway made of asphalt, you'll want to make sure you keep the following things in mind:

It's All About The Season

If you have been thinking about installing an asphalt driveway for a while, now is the time to act. Most asphalt contractors only install driveways in the spring, summer and early fall. You can't install asphalt when it's freezing outside.

If you try to install asphalt when it is freezing outside, there is a large chance your asphalt will crack and will not set properly. In order to set correctly, your new driveway needs to set and adjust to its new location, preferably when there is warmer weather.

Shop Around For The Best Deal

You should call at least two or three different asphalt contractors in your area in order to get a few estimates and determine which contractor is right for you. You should base your decision on:

  • the cost of the service
  • the quality of the material used
  • and the ability of the contractor to accommodate your schedule.

Don't Walk On Your Driveway Right Away

When you schedule your driveway to be paved, make sure you can park your vehicle somewhere else for a day or two. Generally, you should give your new driveway at least a day to dry and set.

Even if it feels dry to the touch, you should still give it at least a day to set; the material under the surface could still be hardening.

If it is really hot outside, you may even want to wait forty-eight hours before you start using your driveway again. Hot weather can prolong the setting process.

It Could Take A While For The Imperfections To Fade Away

Finally, once your new asphalt is down and set, you may still be able to notice small imperfections such as brush or roller strokes. These little imperfections should not be apparent forever; generally, after you have worn in and used your driveway for a few months, these small imperfections will fade away, and your new asphalt driveway should look perfectly smooth.

If you want to lay down a new asphalt driveway, make sure you find a qualified contractor like Mariotti Bill Site Development Co Inc to lay it down before the cold weather returns. Make sure you give your new driveway a day or two to set; adding in this wait time will extend the life of your new driveway.
